Solidarity with Haiti

DID support for the Haitian financial cooperatives began in 1995. Over the years, this support has made it possible to increase the professionalism of the cooperatives, introduce technological innovations to meet the needs expressed by their members, design financial products that facilitate access to basic education and more recently, in 2007, set up the Le Levier federation.

Following the January 12 earthquake, the Desjardins Group reaffirmed its support for its Haitian partners. A major fundraising campaign was organized among its current and retired directors and employees, and DID assured the Le Levier federation that it would continue to collaborate with the federation in its reconstruction efforts.

The Le Levier federation of Haitian financial cooperatives is the largest microfinance institution in Haiti: through its 340,000 members it reaches 20% of the population.

SANASA and Desjardins: Going beyond reconstruction

Four years after the tsunami which destroyed a large part of Sri Lanka, SANASA, the largest network of financial cooperatives in Sri Lanka, has reported positive results from the Support Project for Reconstruction in Sri Lanka carried out by Développement international Desjardins (DID). Three hundred financial cooperatives in the SANASA network, some of which had been completely destroyed by the tidal wave, were able to count on expertise from DID for support to reorganize their activities

Agricultural finance at the heart of rural development

One of our main concerns at DID is to ensure that the financial services offered in developing countries are diversified and adapted to the needs of those who use them. This is clearly illustrated in this video which shows the efforts made by DID and the financial institutions it supports to adapt their services to the realities of the agricultural sector, a sector in which the majority of people in developing countries are involved. The video was filmed in Burkina Faso, Tanzania and Mexico.

Serving Entrepreneurs

Around the world, entrepreneurs have a great economic impact in their communities. For this reason, DID suggests to its partners - financial institutions that facilitate access to financial services for communities in developing countries - that they specialize and professionalize the services offered to this clientele. This video shows the impact of introducing a financial centre for entrepreneurs (CFE), with DID support, on members, the financial institutions involved in the CFE and the community overall.

Making financial services accessible

Ensuring better access to financial services constitutes, in the case of several developing countries, a major challenge. To succeed, the financial institutions must introduce innovative strategies that make it possible to reach groups that are usually marginalized. This video presents several of these strategies that have been integrated in Mexico, Mali and elsewhere to better serve the members and advise them as their needs change.
