January 12 is the sad anniversary of the terrible earthquake that shookHaitiin 2010. Two years after the tragedy the scars are still visible but there are numerous positive results and the country is starting to take control of the situation.
It should be noted that Desjardins Group reacted quickly to the tragedy by launching a wide-scale inter-cooperation campaign among its employees and administrators collecting over one million dollars. The funds were placed under the management of Développement international Desjardins (DID) to serve the Le Levier federation of Haitian financial cooperatives which has been a longstanding partner of DID and a key player in rebuilding Haiti.
Over the last two years, the financial support provided by the Desjardins Group has added to the technical assistance from DID, along with contributions from several Desjardins experts who carried out ten technical missions to assist the Le Levier federation. This support has borne fruit with Le Levier today posting benefits higher than in 2009, before the earthquake. Indicators also show net increases in relation to 2010 of 26 percent in assets, 25.5 percent in deposits, 30.5 percent in loans and 25 percent in capitalization.
