Vision

The DID mission is to empower the disadvantaged in developing countries and countries in transition by developing community-owned and operated financial institutions which will have an impact on the community.

DID interventions are based on several fundamental principles. These principles stated below have inspired DID from its inception and have guided it throughout its evolution and will continue to light the way for its future. For details on DID positions on the various aspects of community finance, consult DID positions”.

DID values

  • Access to financial services is not a privilege, but a necessity for everyone
DID believes that access to financial services is a right, not a privilege. For this reason, DID devotes much effort to remaining innovative in its approach to reaching and responding to the needs of the poor and disadvantaged… there where they live. Because rights involve responsibilities, DID maintains constant watch over the governance of the institutions it supports.

  • Empowering communities
For DID, building local infrastructure is a way to empower communities. This means setting up local institutions owned by local interests and not controled by foreign owners.

Building wealth for individuals and the community involves encouraging savings deposits that will help increase local empowerment.

Financial institutions supported by DID strengthen local leadership and democracy since stakeholders in the community become involved in the democratic governance of their financial institution (decision making, management, etc.).

  • Relevant solutions
DID professionals are concerned with adapting their efforts to solve the partner's specific needs. DID is convinced that the pertinence of its solutions is based on its ability to review and modify its products and services on an ongoing basis. To achieve that goal, DID devotes major effort to innovation and never hesitates to establish partnerships with experts offering complementary knowledge and expertise.

  • Individuals make the difference
At Desjardins, Money must always be at the service of people. Never the other way around! This belief is what motivates DID professionals to place individuals at the core of their concerns for their consulting contracts. For DID, change can only be effective when it is undertaken by individuals in the community for the community as a whole. That is why DID insists on involving individuals in the community to seek out new ideas and solutions and define community needs. Individuals are the assets to be prized and protected during a partnership.

  • Enduring partnerships
In its efforts, DID aims to make an important and structural contribution to development. That is why the DID team puts so much importance on establishing enduring partnerships, maintaining good relationships among the stakeholders on a project and accompanying partners throughout all phases of development.
