General information
Foreign stays The Department of Foreign Affairs has a complete section for Canadians traveling or posted abroad: Information and Assistance for Canadians Abroad.
When you live for more than three months outside Canada you must register with the nearest Canadian Government office.
In some countries where Canada has no direct representation, you register at the Embassy or Consulate of a country with which Canada has signed an agreement. Canadian news To stay up-to-date on domestic as well as foreign news Radio Canada International provides daily news reports on all subjects covered by Canadian news outlets.
Essential documents
Passport You can obtain information and even request a passport on-line at the Passport Bureau website. Applications are also available in passport offices (listed on the website), in Canadian missions abroad and in travel agencies.
International driving permit To obtain an international driver's permit, you must first have a valid domestic driver's license. It is important to obtain it before your departure. CAA Québec is the only organization in Québec authorized to issue international driver's permits. You can print out an application form from its website.
Health
Immunization Everyone travelling abroad must be immunized against certain diseases and be aware of certain precautions to take to avoid health problems. Some vaccines and medicines need to be administered several months before departure. The list of Travel Clinics Across Canada is available on Health Canada's website. The section on Immunizations Recommended for Travel Outside of Canada provides general information on diseases for which you need protection, recent notices on prevention in certain countries against diseases and news from international authorities along with practical advice.
