Working at DID – FAQ

Find the answers to your questions.

What is the best way to keep informed about vacant positions at DID?
DID announces vacant positions on the Careers page of the Desjardins Group website. Submit your profile there in order to receive job offers corresponding to your field of employment.

We also suggest that you sign up for the DID mailing list to receive new job offers from DID. When you are on the mailing list you will receive email notification of vacant positions regardless of your field of expertise.

How can I apply for a job at DID?
If you are interested in a long-term contract abroad or a job at the head office, apply directly using the Careers page of the Desjardins Group website for the available position.

If you are interested in a short-term posting abroad, we suggest you consult the section Short-term contracts abroad. You can send in your resumé by email to the Human Resources division c/o rh@did.qc.ca mentioning that you are interested in a short-term contract.

If you are interested in a short-term contract abroad and are an employee of the Desjardins Group, we ask you to include a letter from your manager stating that they agree to grant you a leave of absence for a possible short-term contract with DID.

I wish to work abroad for DID as an advisor or director. On your website I see that you seek candidates with several years experience in the financial sector. How can I acquire this experience?
Experience in the financial sector can be acquired in a financial cooperative or bank. Examples include a Desjardins financial cooperative, a Desjardins Business Centre, a component or subsidiary of the Desjardins Group linked to our sectors of activity, etc.

Is it mandatory to have Canadian citizenship or landed immigrant status to work for DID?
To work at the head office or for projects financed by the Government of Canada, you must have Canadian citizenship or landed immigrant status.

When the position is financed by donor agencies other than the Government of Canada and if the position is abroad, Canadian citizenship or landed immigrant status is not necessarily mandatory.

If I am hired by DID to work abroad for a long-term posting can my family accompany me?
For a long-term posting abroad, which is a contract lasting one year or more, your family may accompany you.

I expressed interest in a short-term contract and sent my resumé to be included in your applicant database. When can I expect to receive an offer for a contract?
DID calls on external resources for short-term contracts abroad in three specific instances :

  • when there are no employees available for the position at the DID head office;
  • when the contract requires expertise not possessed by DID personnel;
  • when DID must reply to a service offer from an international donor agency.

Are there positions at DID that do not require experience in the financial sector?
Yes, some positions at the head office do not require specific experience in the financial sector. These are professional and technical positions in accounting, communications, human resources, training, information technology and administrative support.

Is it possible to get an internship with DID?
Yes, it is possible. However, the number and type of internships are very limited.

Two possible types of internship are:

  • Business internships :
    In order to provide adequate supervision and ensure that each internship presents an interesting challenge for the intern, DID accepts from two to four interns a year.

    Priority is given to university students working on a degree in administration (finance, accounting, economy) or a DID-related field, and to employees currently working for the Desjardins Group who must complete an internship to obtain a university degree.
  • International internships :
    Over the past ten years, DID collaboration with the Government of Canada in its Youth Employment Strategy Program (YES) has made it possible for more than thirty young university graduates to take part in an international internship.

    Please note that DID is not offering the international internship program in 2008-2009.

    If you are interested in this type of internship, please consult the FAQ at the start of 2009 when we will announce our decision concerning participation in the program for 2009-2010. We will also announce application procedures.

    You can learn more about the International Youth Internship Program on the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) website.

How do I submit my application for a business internship?
We ask you to send your application by email to rh@did.qc.ca. Please include the following details:

  • The reasons for your application and the context of the internship;
  • The goal or subject(s) that you wish to cover during the internship;
  • Duration requested;
  • Preferred dates for the internship;
  • Whether you are applying for an internship abroad or at the DID head office in Lévis;
  • Closing date for receiving a reply from DID;
  • Your resumé (if it is not included with your application).

Are DID internships remunerated?
This depends on the type of internship :

  • Business internships :
    Unfortunately, DID does not have a budget for paying business interns or the costs related to logistics and travel abroad. Interns must arrange other means of financing through their university, fund raising or their own savings.
  • International internships :
    Please note that DID is not offering the international internship program in 2008-2009.
    Each internship, lasting six months, is made possible through a financial contribution from CIDA. Interns are paid approximately $280 per week, plus a housing allowance of $100 per week. DID also pays for the purchase of airplane tickets, visa (if required), vaccinations and health insurance.

Does DID have a volunteer cooperation program?
No, DID does not have a volunteer cooperation program in the countries where it is working. This is because the support that DID provides to its partner financial institutions requires expertise and professional experience in the financial sector.

However, DID manages a partner coaching program mainly designed for recently retired Desjardins Group employees. It enables volunteer-experts to transfer the expertise they have acquired during their career to DID partners.
